Apple announced the iPad 2, a new version of its popular tablet that will ship on March 11, today. We'll keep this short and sweet, but we figured we'd give you an overview. In a nutshell, the iPad 2 is thinner, faster, and has more features than the original iPad.
Here are some of the notable additons:
- Dual-Core Processor: The iPad 2 sports Apple's new A5 1 GHz dual-core processor. Early reports are that the jump to dual-core technology really makes a difference in the tablet's speed.
- Slimmer Design: The iPad is a third slimmer than the original. To give you a frame of reference, at 8.8 mm, it's thinner than the iPhone 4.
- Front- and Rear-Facing Cameras: A big beef with the original iPad was its lack of cameras, especially when the iPhone 4 brought FaceTime video calling to the iOS family. Well, that's all fixed with the iPad 2. FaceTime is most certainly supported, and the tablet can shoot HD (720p) video with the rear camera.
- iOS 4.3: Alongside the new tablet, Apple will release the iOS 4.3 software update. The update includes improved performance for Safari, new AirPlay features, and Personal Hotspot support for the iPhone 4.
- Garage Band and iMovie: Apple's popular media editing apps will be available for the iPad now, costing merely $4.99 each. The Garage Band app is especially designed for use on the iPad 2's large touchscreen, as it includes a wide array of virtual instruments that look pretty cool.
There's more, of course, including 1080p HDMI output capability and new magnetic covers that turn into stands. Notably absent, though, is the rumored SD card slot. As far as price goes, the structure is the same as
the original iPad's. Interested in learning more? Hit up
